Mandate

Yukon Music Camp Society (YMCS) is a registered non-profit organization. The purpose of the society is to foster the musical development of Yukon musicians by sponsoring and organizing a summer music camp, which teaches musicians valuable performance skills, and encourages and enhances music appreciation.

Profile

The Yukon Music Camp Society was formed in January 1999. Prior to this time, the Yukon Music Teachers Association organized the Summer Music Camp. A summer music camp program has been offered in Whitehorse for the past 22 years. It was the continual growth and success of the camp in the years leading up to 1999 that eventually necessitated the creation of a society that would deal exclusively with the summer camp coordination.

Local music organizations are represented on the society’s board of directors and their interests are directly reflected in the design of the courses offered. Familiar with the activities of various music groups, they are able to develop courses that will best meet the needs of local musicians. The Board of the Yukon Music Camp Society is closely involved in the entire programming and running of the camp. For 2012, YMCS has contracted a coordinator to assist with administration, production and operation of the summer camp.

YMCS has the support of local associations involved in music education and performance including: Yukon Music Teachers Association, Suzuki Strings Association, Whitehorse Community Choir, Yukon Music Educators Association, Whitehorse Concerts, Vanier Band Parent Association, Yukon Arts Centre, and Jazz Yukon.
